Broke Barn Climbing
Broke Barn Climbing

On Thursday, 14 February 2013, Broke Barn Climbing Gym burned down. It was a complete loss. This is, of course, very sad news, as Broke Barn (a.k.a. Wall-Nut Creek) was a huge part of the Ames area climbing community. Thank you to all who worked there and climbed there to make it such a great place for all of us over the years.

Broke Barn Climbing (formerly Wall-Nut Creek) is a local climbing gym inside a barn. They have built all kinds of custom walls inside, including tall routes, lead routes, and lots of great bouldering areas. Their website is at iowaclimbing.com. Normal hours are Mon/Wed/Fri 6:00pm-9:00pm and Sat 12:00pm-5:00pm.

Directions:

[Google Map]

Take University Blvd (formerly Elwood Dr) south. Go straight (south) past the four-way stop at Airport Rd. The road will turn to gravel (and becomes 530th Ave). Continue south about three miles. Broke Barn is a large barn on your right (west) and has a sign out front.

If you want to avoid gravel as much as possible, or if you live on the east side of town, take Duff Ave south about three miles past the edge of Ames. Turn right (west) on 280th St (toward Kelley). After about a mile and a half, there will be a bunch of large grey metal silos and a large white farm building on the right (north). Just past those silos, turn right (north) on 530th Ave, which is a gravel road. You will still have to go almost half a mile on gravel. Broke Barn will be on your left (west).
