- Part 1: Basics
- Put on a club owned harness
- Put on a club owned helmet
- Show a beginner how to put on a harness and helmet
- Part 2: Knots
- All knots must
be properly dressed with the correct amount of tail.
- Tie all members of the figure eight family in webbing (figure eight, on a
bight, on a bend, follow through)
- Tie all members of the figure eight family in rope (figure eight, on a
bight, on a bend, follow through)
- Tie all members of the overhand family in webbing (overhand, on a bight,
on a bend, follow through)
- Tie all members of the overhand family in rope (overhand, on a bight,
on a bend, follow through)
- Tie a bowline
- Tie a girth hitch
- Tie a clove hitch
- Tie a friction hitch (prussic, Bachman, or Kleimheist)
- Part 3: Belaying
- Pass the Rec Services belay certification and demonstrate proper belay
technique with a tube type belay device
- Part 4: Rappelling
- Use a tube type belay device and rappel yourself over a sharp edge
- Show a beginner how to rappel using the technique above
- Demonstrate a firemen's backup
- Tie a third hand backup
- Properly clean a route and rappel down
- Be able to explain to a beginner how to clean a route
- Part 5: Anchors
- Set a series of anchors using natural protection
- Set a series of anchors using removable artificial protection
- Set a series of anchors using bolted artificial protection
- Part 6: Lead Climbing
- Explain fall factors
- Explain back clipping and z-clipping
- Demonstrate proper lead technique on trad gear
- Demonstrate proper lead technique on sport gear
- Properly place trad gear, slings, and runout
To be certified as a trip leader, certification must be approved by two
current trip leaders or one executive trip leader.
All trip leaders must have been on at least two trips and paid their dues.
